The 2x4 Bunker Drill

Description: The 2x4 Bunker Drill helps you get comfortable hitting out of the sand using the back edge of your club (the bounce) and an open club face, rather than digging into the sand with the leading edge.

Summary:
  1. Practice with a 2x4 long enough that you won't hit the back edge when you set your club in the middle. You can also paint the 2x4 for additional help seeing where your club is hitting the board.
  2. Embed the 2x4 in the sand down your target line. You will hit the top of the 2x4 as you would hit the sand when trying to hit a bunker shot. By hitting the 2x4, you will be able to see the marks on the board and the paint (if used) on the bottom of your club face, where you are impacting the sand.
  3. Notice that when you hit with the leading edge of the club it will dig into the board and leave a mark on the leading edge of your club face (if painted). Practice opening your club face and hitting with the back edge or bounce of the club. Notice how it skids and how it leaves a mark towards the back edge (bounce) of your club face.
  4. This is a great drill for getting used to using the bounce on the club and seeing an open club face. It also gives you the correct feeling of smacking the top of the sand with the bounce. Practice this drill until you have a consistent mark on the 2x4 and your club face that reinforce you are entering the sand with the bounce and an open club face.
