Question on Bunkers:

I have trouble with bunker shots around the green where I have to carry the ball a long distance. What is your advice?
--Mike C. from Downingtown, PA

Hi Mike. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you with your game.

The long greenside bunker shot is often touted as the most difficult shot in the game. This is due to the fact that you not only have to deal with the sand and how much to take, but it is from an awkward distance as well.

The best course of action here if you are in the 40-60 yard range is to use your normal greenside bunker technique, but go up in club. In other words try and 8 or 9 iron with the same splash technique. The extra club will help fly the ball further and you don't really need to do anything different.

Without seeing your normal set up and swing in a bunker it's hard to say if you are doing everything correctly to begin with. This article will help you:

You might also think about getting a video of yourself hitting a bunker shot and sending it in for analysis if you continue to struggle.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!
