Question on Chipping:

Why do I almost always chip the ball short of the hole?
--James M. from Upper Marlboro, MD

Hi James. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you improve.

My guess is that you are catching the ball a bit heavy or fat. When this happens your club hits the ground behind the ball and you lose a significant amount of speed. Causes of hitting behind the ball are:

1) Poor weight shift
2) An early release
3) Swinging from too far inside/out

To combat this I'd like you to try 3 things:
1) Plant your weight on your front foot and make sure it stays there
2) Keep moving your hands and the handle through the shot so that the clubhead lags behind until after impact
3) Make sure that you keep the clubhead and shaft in front of your toe line throughout the swing.

Also, check out this article here for more steps on how to hit greenside chips:

I hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks.
