Question on Chipping:

I always use my pitching wedge to chip, but I know that others use different clubs, can you explain how different clubs are used and how they impact a chip?

Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

Players may use anything from a lob wedge to a fairway wood to hit a chip shot. A true chip shot is all about keeping the ball low and rolling it up to the flag. Depending on the amount of release or roll you need, you can vary the clubs. Of course, if you are not out practicing a lot, you won't have time to master chipping with 12 different clubs. For this reason I recommend that my students master 2 or 3 clubs and then experiment with the other clubs in their bag. This way, they will always have a couple fall back clubs to use when under pressure. The lower the loft on the club (the lower the number) the lower the ball will come out and the more it will roll. The higher the loft, the more you will carry the ball and get less roll due to back spin.

Thanks for the question and let me know if you have any others.
