Question on Chipping:

Are low, running shots and chips essentially the same type of shot, but just different distances? Do you use the same mechanics that you use to hit a chip that you do to hit a low runner?

Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

Well, there are many different types of chip shots. The top 3 that I teach are the putt-chip, the bump n run and the hinge and hold. These are 3 very different shots. Some chips are low while others have some loft. The bump n run would most resemble a punch or low running shot.

For both a bump n run and a low runner you would set your weight forward or left and focus on keeping it there throughout the swing. This way you feel like you are ahead of the ball and the ball will come out low as the face will be de-lofted at impact. Playing the ball back in your stance and having a low finish will also help you keep the ball down and running. It goes without saying that the lower you want to hit the ball the more you should choose a low lofted club to use.
