Question on Chipping:

What type of grip should be used for chipping? Should I grip loosely? I seem to "press" and grip too tightly and tend to blade the ball often!
--Dick N. from Green Bay, WI

Hi Dick. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

The grip as far as style goes should be the same you use for your full swing. Many people try to do a totally different grip for pitching and chipping, but that is not only unnecessary, it's also confusing and makes it difficult to do anything consistently.

As far as pressure goes, nothing tight is ever good in golf. Tight muscles are slow muscles and lead to jerky movements. Too light on the other hand will cause the club to actually move in your hands and make consistency almost impossible.

Try a good medium pressure and just be sure that the pressure remains the same throughout the entire stroke. Try to feel a constant acceleration as you pivot through the ball and make sure to not have any sudden quickness or acceleration.

I hope that helps and be sure to let me know how it goes.
