Back Foot Out Drill

Description: The Back Foot Out Drill is designed to help you eliminate a huge hip slide or hip spin coming into impact. While we want to use our hips to power the shot, sliding them too much in the downswing can cause errant shots such as a block and spinning them open too early can do the same. Overactive hips are particularly common in junior golfers who are not only super flexible, but look to the lower body where their strength is to get power. The arms are what is connected to the golf swing so we need to get the perfect balance of lower and upper body to maximize distance and control.

Summary:
  1. Simply take your set up as you would with your normal stance. Then flare your back foot out about 45 degrees (more if you are super flexible and/or overactive with your feet and legs).
  2. Next, make some super slow motion practice swings keeping your back foot completely on the ground. I stress "super" slow as this is a good way to blow out a knee or even hurt your hip if you are tight. The swing will feel all arms, but remember we are trying to tone down and over active lower body. This will simply allow your arms to get back down in front of you rather than trying to play catch up to your lets and hips.
  3. After you have a good feel for it go ahead and try making some swings with a ball. Make sure to swing easy. This is not about power, it's about sequence. You should now feel a much more stable lower body and free swinging arms.
