Rate of Rotation Drill

Description: The Rate of Rotation Drill will help you learn to control your distances, accuracy and trajectory by controlling the speed of your swing. Often times a player's speed changes and thus he gets different results and can't control his distance. It is important to control the acceleration point in the swing along with the overall speed to maintain consistency.

Summary:
  1. Start off with any short or mid iron you like. This drill can work in two orders. It can go from slow to fast or from fast to slow. Both versions are great at learning to control your speed.
  2. Starting off slow make some swings that you would consider to be at 10 mph. Maybe hit 5 or 6 balls. Then make some swings at 30 mph, then 50 mph, then 70 mph, then 100, etc. until you find your breaking point. The breaking point would be the point where you lose balance, fall over or just start spraying the ball like crazy. You will feel yourself gradually speeding up your rate of rotation through the shot each time and will get a sense of controlling your acceleration.
  3. Next, work back down in reverse order slowing the swing by increments at each stage. Notice how acceleration also affects the trajectory of the ball. The faster you swing, the higher the ball will jump up. The slower you swing, the lower the ball will come out. This is great for learning to hit into the wind and under tree branches.
  4. Practicing this drill often on the range will give you the confidence to hit knock downs, hit single clubs various distances and gain consistency among the gap in yardage between clubs.
