Question on Diagnosing Problems:

My biggest problem is hitting behind the ball or right down on top of the ball.
--Jack S. from Hot Springs Village, AR

Hi Jack. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you with your game.

It sounds like something is making you hit the bottom point in your arc too soon. Common causes are:

1) Lack of weight shift
2) Releasing the club early
3) Swinging too far inside/out

To make sure that you are going to bottom out at the golf ball or after and take a nice divot, make sure that you are transferring your weight to your front foot before impact. If you hang back too much or too long, you will bottom out behind the ball.

Next, make sure that you are keeping the angles that you establish in your right wrist and right elbow at the top of the swing intact and moving them down with your pivot, not with your arms. It's important to pull the club down with your pivot rather than push it with your upper body so that your angles expand at impact.

If your swing plane comes too far inside/out you can hit the bottom of your arc too soon and essentially drop kick the ball. Be sure to keep the golf club in front of your chest and hands throughout the swing as they were at address if you are getting trapped behind yourself.

I hope these check points help. Give them a try and let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.
