Question on Diagnosing Problems:

My is divot not in front of ball and I have a lack of lag in my swing.
--Jim N. from Dayton, OH

Hi Jim. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

To take a divot after the ball obviously means the clubhead needs to be descending during and after impact. To make this happen we need to strike with a forward leaning shaft and a clubhead that is still trailing the hands.

There are several swing errors that make this difficult to do and among them are poor ball position, releasing early, falling back or reverse weight shift and flipping, etc..

Without seeing your swing it's difficult to say exactly what your swing fault would be. Note that as a Pro member you can send your swing in for analysis. In the meantime, though let me point you to some drills under the Golf Instruction tab than can help with an early release. Try these:

Roll Down Drill
Move The Angles
Towel Drill
Impact Point Drill

You can find them all here:

Give them a try and let me know how it goes.

Thanks.
