Question on Diagnosing Problems:

Can you help me finish on the front foot in perfect balance?
--Paul B. from New Smyrna Beach, FL

Hi Paul,

It sounds like you are having trouble finishing balanced on your front foot.

While this can sometimes be a physical issue with your hips or glutes, I'm going to skip that for a moment and try to give you some suggestions on drills that may help.

The first thing I'd like you to try is making some swings without a ball standing only on your left foot. You can put your right foot behind and almost in line with your left foot and on the tip toe for a little balance, but be careful not to put too much weight on it. If you try to hang back on your right side you will literally fall over.

Without balls practice making swings and keeping balanced on the left foot only. Swing easy at first until it's easy to balance and then try to gradually increase the speed.

At home try to close your eyes and lift one leg bending the knee up until your quadricep is parallel to the ground and stand on one foot for 24 seconds. This is a good check of your balance. Next try it with the other foot. At first it may be very difficult, but with time and practice you will improve.

Next, refer to our site for the Stepping Drill under Instruction and the Diagnosing Problems category. This will help make sure you are transferring your weight to your front foot.

Give these a try and let me know how it goes. Remember to start entering your scores in the free game tracker and log your practice sessions in the practice planner so we can better help you reach your goals.
