Question on Diagnosing Problems:

I am not able to hold a consistent back swing with every stroke. Is this important to maximize my potential and accuracy ? How can I practice this idea of consistent motion both with back and forward swing of the club? Is adding weights to the club a bad idea? Any suggestions. Thanks

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the question. Yes consistency is very important when it comes to maximizing your potential and achieving accuracy. A swing with a lot of excess movement and compensations is not going to hold up from round to round, under pressure and even from day to day.

Adding weight does have the benefit of adding some feel. When something is very light like the shaft and head on a driver, it's hard for us to feel where things are and groove a consistent plane. Weight is great for increasing strength as well. I think because it will slow down your swing and cause you to fatigue that extra weight should be used only in practice. Making slow, repeated swings with a weighted club is good at grooving a feel for your swing plane while increasing endurance at the same time. When you are actually playing or hitting balls though, I would go with a swing weight and overall weight that is properly matched to your strength and club head speed.

I think to gain the consistency you are after you need to focus primarily on two things: A) Slow motion swings B) Using a mirror.

When you are swinging fast you lose a certain amount of feel as to where the club is and what body parts are moving and when. When you go slow, you can feel exactly what is happening. I would think making hundreds of slow motion repeatable swings would really help you get your swing plane/path in a groove.

Using a mirror gives your brain instant feedback. It is useful for seeing where the club head and shaft are throughout the swing. All too often we feel one thing, but are doing another. Using a mirror will let you know immediately if in fact what you think you are doing is what you actually are doing.

Try these two suggestions for a while and see if they don't bring consistency back to your game.
