Question on Diagnosing Problems:

How do I increase swing speed?
--Joe P. from South Londonderry, VT

Hi Joe. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm really excited to help you with your game.

Increasing swing speed in my opinion depends on 3 factors:

1) Your fitness/strength level
2) Your technique
3) Your equipment

It is just a fact that the more fit you are (strong and flexible), the faster you will be able to move. Strength and flexibility training helps any and every golfer improve their distance.

Your technique obviously has a ton to do with club head speed as well. Obviously if you are firing the wrong body parts and in the wrong order you will be moving slower through impact. If you are spinning the ball or launching it incorrectly because of a poor swing plane or angle of attack, this will affect your overall distance. Without seeing your swing I can't comment on why you would be losing distance. You may consider sending your swing in for analysis.

While drills are reserved for our Pro Subscribers I'm going to give you this one for free Joe because it helps demonstrate the correct sequence and transfer of power in the downswing:

As far as your equipment goes the only option here is to get custom fit by a certified professional and on a launch monitor. You need to make sure the shaft has the correct weight, flex and kick point to match your swing. You also need to make sure that the shaft/head combination is giving you the best spin rates and launch angles.

I hope that information helps and if you have any other questions please let me know.
