Question on Diagnosing Problems:

My tee shots have gone from straight with a slight draw to straight right. Sometimes they are missing the fairway by 30 yards. The strike seems very solid, just way right. Thoughts?
--Jim W. from Spencerport, NY

Hi Jim. Thanks for writing I'm looking forward to helping you with your game.

It definitely sounds like you are now hitting a push/block. If you were hitting a draw before you were swinging on an inside/out path. When you swing on that path and release the face, you get a nice draw. When you come from inside/out and don't release the face however, you get a push.

While most amateurs struggle with a slice and coming outside/in, some do go the other route and get the club too severely inside/out on the downswing. Many tour pros and skilled player often suffer this swing path error as well. The key is to keep the club in front of you were it started at address throughout the swing. I have 2 great drills for this. The first covers your takeaway to ensure you are not getting the club trapped or laid off early in the backswing. The second drill helps you to get your downswing more on plane by preventing you from swinging out to the right of your target.

Normally drills are reserved only for Pro subscribers, but I like to give one or two away for free so you can see how easily they can help. Give these a try Jim and let me know how it goes.
