Question on Diagnosing Problems:

Hi Maria,

Thanks for the follow up e-mail.

Quick question on an issue that is driving me crazy. Do you have any drills for maintaining the flex in the right knee during the backswing? I have video'd my swing changes over a period of 6 months or so and the biggest issue that has plagued me is straightening the right leg during the backswing, causing the right side to get high and an over the top move. With the right leg straight, it also forces me to push off the right leg, causing early extension. Any solutions?

Your website is great, with lots of valuable content.

Hi David. Thanks for the compliments and thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

As for the right knee there is a training aid which is a strap that helps you maintain the flex. The name of it escapes me at the moment, but I think it's the "Power Coil". You could just Google training aids for golf and probably find it. It does work for some.

Most player are also rolling out onto the outside of their right foot. When you roll out, it's much easier to straighten up. I would suggest drills to stay on the inside of your right arch at the top of your backswing. You can use a wood block or a range ball tray to wedge under the outside of your right foot. This helps keep your right instep on the ground with your weight planted there.

Sometimes it helps to do the opposite to. Meaning try to actually squat down or sit down in your right thigh as you swing up. You should feel a really good tight feeling in your right glute and hamstring if you are keeping your knee flexed.

I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks!
