Question on Diagnosing Problems:

What swing thoughts are best to prevent hanging back on your right side?
--Jim D. from Fort Lauderdale, FL

Hi Jim.

Thanks for the question. Without seeing your swing it's always hard to diagnose the cause of a players swing error.

One of the most common causes of hanging back is simply a lack of lower body action at the start of the downswing. In other words, if you start your downswing with your upper body by throwing either your arms or shoulders at the ball, your upper body will overtake your lower body. When this happens, your hips pretty much stay stagnant or put on the breaks and your weight does not get through the ball.

A couple of things to keep in mind are:

1) Always swing to a complete finish point. The ball is only the half way point in the swing. Don't swing to the ball, focus on accelerating all the way into your finish.

2) Initiate the downswing with the lower body always.

This article here will help explain how the hips work in the golf swing:

I hope these thoughts help and if you have any other questions let me know.

Thanks.
