Question on Driving:

When you tee off is it good to have a lot of height?
--Sam G. from Holcomb, KS

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the question. The key is to get the "right" height. What I mean by that is there is an optimum launch angle that will give you the best carry. A combination of spin rate and launch angle will help determine your overall distance. In fact, golfers can have a fairly big difference in club head speed, but by adjusting the launch angle and spin rate they may end up with close to the same overall distance.

The great thing about playing golf today is that launch monitors are readily available. Almost every big golf retail store has one. I suggest you get to a launch monitor and hopefully with a good club fitter and see if your driver is giving you the best launch and spin rates for your swing.

I find for most higher handicappers that more height is better for distance. This is of course without too much backspin. If they launch the ball up, they tend to get more carry. Too many players knock the ball out low and it just dies when it hits the ground.

Thanks for the question and be sure to check out our section on driver on the site!
