Question on Equipment:

For the average 15 handicapper, do you recommend they carry 3 and 4 irons or hybrids?

Most definitely hybrids. I remember giving a lesson one day in Chicago to a Welsh student who was obviously used to playing in the rough wind and rain. He was a -1 handicap at the time. He worked in the golf business, fitted and sold clubs making him very knowledgeable. He made the comment one day when hybrids were just getting known that they were "stupid easy to hit." I noticed more and more tour players and even lower handicaps using them. So why wouldn't a medium to high handicapper take advantage of their forgiving nature. Manufacturers take the best aspects of woods and irons and combine them to make the hybrid easy to swing and forgiving. They are easier to get loft and even hit out of questionable lies than long irons. I really don't see 3 irons anymore in student's bags. I see the occasional 4 iron and usually ask the student if they have considered swapping it out for a more consistent hybrid.
