Question on Equipment:

Should a senior citizen use a lighter set of clubs?
--George H. from Junction City, OH

Hi Gary. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

That is a great question and one I was just recently asked by another user. The benefit of lighter is two fold:

1) If something is lighter you can swing it faster and thus increase clubhead speed.

2) If you walk and carry the overall weight of your bag will be lighter which would help you maintain energy levels.

Going too light however can cause a player to lose feel and everyone is different. The very best way to know what you should be using is to get on a launch monitor. After your clubhead speed is measured and the flex you need is determined you can experiment with steel shafts vs graphite shafts (graphite is more shock absorbing so a lot of seniors like that feature) and within those different weights and kick points. A good fitter and a launch monitor can help you determine the best shaft for your swing.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks!
