Question on Getting Started:

How should a golfer determine what tee box to play from?

In my opinion, in a perfect world, all golfers would play the forward tees until they can shoot par from there. This is very difficult though, as a lot men are emabarrassed to play the forward tees. This is why many resorts have taken the color red off of the forward tees and encourage players to play tees that match their ability or handicap. The other issue is that most golfers want to hit driver and hit it long. If you put some men up on the forward tees, they can't hit driver and that is no fun either. My suggestion is to play the course as short as possible where you can still hit driver, but shoot low scores and play in less than 4 hours for 18 holes. Keep in mind, even if you play routinely from say 6400 yards and shoot high 70's, it is still fun and good for your mental game and confidence to go up to the forward tees and shoot a low number maybe even under par. Until you have "gone low" your brain won't believe you can do it. It's mental condiditoning.
