Question on Getting Started:

Many of the questions asked used jargon that is golf related, but if one is new to the sport it's difficult to figure out what they are asking you to correct. People say they hit it fat, or thin, etc. What does that mean? It would be helpful if you just quickly explain a term in your answer so we know how to relate the answer to our personal game.

Hi Robert. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to working with you.

Fat basically means you hit behind the ball and catch the ground first. Usually you will get grass and dirt caught between the clubface and the ball so it is not a clean strike. You lose a significant amount of distance on fat (also called heavy or chunky) shots.

Thin on the other hand is when you don't hit fully down under the ball. Basically you catch the ball a bit high, maybe near the equator or a bit lower. It has a stinging feeling and the flight will be lower with less spin.

I hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks.
