Question on Getting Started:

For someone just starting golfing, what should their initial goals be?

Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

As far as full swing ball flight results go, I tell my students to rank their goals this way:

1) Make consistent contact with the ball (eliminate whiffs)
2) Hit down on the ball getting it to pop up in the air
3) Hit straight shots
4) Hit far (distance)

If a beginner can put emphasis on each of these goals one at a time and in this order they will find success much quicker than if they try to accomplish everything at once. This also helps them better understand what's more important when it comes to shooting low scores. For instance, if they constantly try to kill it to get as much distance as possible, but are whiffing the ball fairly often, they are just racking up the strokes. The object of the game is to get the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible, not to look good!

Remember it's a process. A journey. Set small goals and ones that are achievable to stay engaged and encouraged. It's a game that no one has mastered so you have to be realistic about it.

Thanks for the question and if you have any others, just let me know.
