Question on Golf Fitness:

How can I get a bigger turn? My buddies say I don't get behind the ball.

Hi Chad. Thanks for writing I'm looking forward to helping you improve.

As you can imagine this is a very common compliant that I receive in lessons. The question is are you not turning because you don't really have an understanding of how to do it properly, or is there a physical limitation? A lot of players dip their shoulders as opposed to turning them. Other players actually do turn their shoulders, but because they allow their hips to move so much as well, they actually create little coil.

If you lay a club across the top of your shoulders when you turn to the top I want to see that the end of the club points somewhere between your ball and 4 feet outside your ball. This tells us that you aren't too steep or too flat with your shoulder turn. The other thing I want to see is that the end of the club gets to at least where the ball is so that you are making a 90 degree shoulder turn. If you aren't able to do that then the issue is most likely physical.

As you will see in the attached video by our fitness expert Jeff, if it's your shoulders that are limiting your movement then exercises such as Open Books and Reach Backs can really help you increase the amount of rotation you get out of your shoulders. If the problem lies in your hips you may want to try a few different exercises such as stork turns.

I hope that helps and please let me know if you have any other questions. Don't forget to check out the Fitness category on the site for more information on how you can get "golf fit."
