Question on Golf Fitness:

What are the best exercises to get the lower back (L3,4,5,S1) into shape after surgery?
--Deland P. from Farmington, NM

Hi Deland. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you with your game.

Since you are recovering from surgery and have a physician, he or she would definitely be the one to ask as I'm not a doctor and don't want to point you in the wrong direction. It's been my experience that physical therapists are great for people with injuries or post surgery at helping them get on track much more quickly so you may want to seek one out.

Through the years through golf fitness training and working with different trainers and therapists I have learned that it's so important to keep the muscles that surround the back strong to keep the back healthy. In other words, the supporting muscles are as or even more important. For that reason, I would suggest that you don't forget about or neglect your abdominals, glutes and hamstrings. We need these muscles strong and flexible to keep the back healthy.

I hope that helps.

Thanks!
