Question on Golf Fitness:

Maria - As winter forces us to move from the golf course to the fitness club, are there any particular types of exercises or weight training examples that can actually harm our golf swing and that we should avoid?
--Tim M. from Charleston, IL

Hi Tim.

That's a great question. They used to say swimming was bad for a golf swing when I was little and then they changed it and said don't swim the day before or the day of an event.

In reality most amateurs and especially adults need all the stretching and strengthening we can get. There is nothing wrong with getting strong in every muscle of your body. There are muscles however, like the biceps that we really don't use all that much so you don't need to spend a lot of time on them for golf.

Obviously, body builders who bulk up too much will lose a lot of flexibility and then won't be able to get their swing in ideal positions, but this isn't the case for most of us. I would just get on a good overall fitness program (strengthening, cardio, stretching) and put more emphasis on golf specific fitness exercises which you can find right here in our fitness section on the site.

Here is a good article for a quick golf fitness workout for those that are short on time:
