Question on Hybrids and Woods:

I seem to have a hard time hitting decent fairway wood shots.
I tend to top most of them or sky them! Any suggestions?
--John F. from Newark, DE

Hi John. Thanks for writing

First of all when you sky them are you referring to when you hit them off of a tee? It would be rare for someone to sky a fairway wood from the fairway. Let me know so I can accurately diagnose that problem for you.

As far as topping them goes this of course is a very common problem. The reasons someone tops the ball can be many, but the most common are:

Hanging back or falling back during the swing onto the rear foot
Standing up out of your posture
Playing the ball too far forward
Short arming it

The first thing I would recommend is that you check your ball position. I would recommend playing it just forward of center. If you have a logo on your shirt you can play it opposite that. The next thing I would do is make sure you are getting to a full balanced finish on your front foot. Finish with your back foot on the tip toe with no weight on it. You may need to also work on transferring your weight earlier in the downswing. Many players hang back as they strike the ball and then shift after impact. To combat this you may hit some balls off of your front foot only which you can see with the Weight Forward drill found here:

Another drill you may try on the same page is the Cheek Down Drill as it will help you remain in your posture through impact.

Give these all a try and let me know how it goes.
