Question on Hybrids and Woods:

How do you hit a 3 wood?
--Greg S. from San Diego, CA

Hi Greg. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you improve.

Hitting a 3 wood is definitely a challenge for the vast majority of players including professionals. You probably know as a club gets longer and has less loft it becomes more difficult to control. The driver is the longest club in the bag and has the least amount of loft, but you have the added benefit of a tee with the driver. The tee gives you a lot of room for error. Hitting a 3 wood off the deck is an entirely different story. Not only is it long with very little loft, it is also light making it difficult to feel the head throughout the swing.

The most important thing to know is that you should only hit the 3 wood when you "need" to. That means if it's a tight driving hole and driver doesn't make sense or if you need 3 wood to reach the green. In other words, if you are on a par 5 and you can't reach the green anyway on your second shot, why mess with the 3 wood? Pull out a 5 wood or 7 wood or something much safer and much more accurate if you are going to have to hit a 3rd shot anyway.

Successfully hitting a 3 wood off the deck mainly requires an accurate set up, good weight transfer and a downward strike. I think this article here will explain a lot and really help you get it going:
