Question on Hybrids and Woods:

I'm having trouble being consistent with my fairway woods. I love to use my 3-5 woods but they cost me strokes.
--Maureen F. from Carmel, IN

Hi Maureen. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you with your game.

You are definitely not alone when it comes to fairway woods. For most of us, when we hit them good, we hit them really good. When we miss them, however, it can really cost us and it's never pretty. To be consistent with fairway woods requires:

1) An ideal set up
2) The right angle of attack
3) Good balance/weight transfer

I often tell me students to only hit the wood that is necessary. For instance, if you aren't going to reach the green anyway, why go for the longer and less lofted 3 wood? Just hit a 5 or 7 where you are more likely to have better control and pull off a nice shot.

I'd like to start first with having you review your set up and approach to these shots. Sometimes just a little tweak in your ball position, weight distribution or even mind set when hitting these can make a big difference. Please review the following article and let me know how you do afterwards. If it hasn't gotten better just right back with the details on whats happening with your ball flight and I'd love to help further.
