Question on Hybrids and Woods:

I'm having trouble hitting fairway woods.
--Bill F. from Davenport, FL

Hi Bill. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you improve your game.

I'm not sure what issues you are having specifically with the woods, but there are a couple of things to consider. Since woods are longer, lighter and have less loft, they are difficult to feel and mishits can be magnified.

I would recommend that you always hit only the longest wood necessary. In other words, if you are not going to reach the green, choose a 7 wood over a 3 wood. You will simply have more control and hit it more solid and straighter more often.

With that being said there are some common mistakes golfers make with the fairway woods:

- playing the ball too far forward or back in the stance
- poor weight shift
- having too quick of a transition
- trying to help them up

To hit fairway woods successfully you need to position them just forward of the center of your stance by one or two balls (whichever gives you the most success). Next you need to make sure that you have a smooth transition from your backswing to your downswing, hit down on the ball and make a smooth weight transfer to your front foot. I'm hoping one of those things jumps out at you as one of the areas you may be off.
