Question on Irons:

I hit my iron shots really high. Is that a problem to address?

High is always relative. A lot of students come to the lesson tee with the same complaint. The first question I ask is if they have ever seen a PGA tour player hit a shot with an iron or their driver in person. Most of them answer "no.". If you haven't, you would be suprised at how high they hit the ball.

The first time I saw Tiger hit in person I was blown away! I could not believe how high his driver went and it seemed to stay in the air forever. It takes speed to propel the ball upward. Tiger swinging at 124 mph verses an 80 year old swinging at 60 mph is a big difference in height. This is the reason why the 80 year old might actually hit their pitching wedge farther than their driver. If they are swinging slow enough, the driver with little loft will fly low and just dive into the ground, whereas the pitching wedge will fly higher and remain in the air longer.

Most of the shots you hit into the green you want to come in high so they stick and don't roll past the pin. If you are scooping the ball because of bad technique and hitting weak puffy shots, then that is obviously not good.
