Question on Irons:

Hi Maria,

I love your tip on placing a tee 2" in front of the ball and focusing on the tee to ensure you hit thru the shot. Is there any thing wrong doing this during a round by focusing on a spot in front of the ball? I feel I strike the ball better this way and I avoid hitting it fat.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave. Thanks for writing in to MyGolfInstructor.com.

Picking a spot in front of the ball is a great trick to make sure you hit through the ball and down and get a good divot. In fact, I've heard professionals say they don't actually look at the ball, but at a spot in front.

Physically putting a tee there is alright in a practice round, but you obviously could not do that in a tournament as it would be a penalty. When you don't have a tee in the ground though, you can easily just pick a spot on the grass that is discolored or stands out.
