Question on Irons:

Hi, how far do I take the back swing at take away and from the time the club is parallel (to the ground) do i go straight up or slightly outside?
--Ismail A. from New York, NY

Hi Ismail. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

As far as the length of backswing goes I base that on the individual. A backswing is complete in my opinion once a player has made a full coil, which hopefully includes a full shoulder turn. For some that may mean the arms get up nice and high and the clubshaft gets parallel to the ground at the top of the swing. For others with shorter arms and limited flexibility the club may not reach parallel and their hands may not even get up higher than their shoulders.

When you say "does it go straight up or slightly outside" I think what you are asking is should you swing around or up on the backswing with your arms. Actually the backswing is both combined which makes an arc. Your arms basically do swing straight back and up, but your shoulder turn brings your clubs and arms around on an arc and to the inside. Remember that your arms should stay relatively connected to your core and that your pivot/shoulder coil determines where they go unless you have a big disconnect.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions just let me know. Thanks.
