Question on Irons:

What are your thoughts on the single plane swing?
--Edward P. from Rehoboth, MA

Hi Edward. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

That's a very good question and one that I stay fairly neutral on answering. The one plane swing and two plane swing are of course nothing new. They have both been around for years and years, but every time an instructor comes out with a new book or new "method" the debate resurfaces.

I believe there are benefits to both. What I mean by that is, yes it would be perfect if we could all simply swing on one plane, but it also makes sense that our body type and how we function should help determine which we option we use.

You should never force yourself into something that is physically very difficult if not impossible. While I believe swinging on a perfect plane consistently all the time is very difficult for most players I still teach my students to get as close to one plane as possible. The less the shaft moves around the more consistent you will be and the more distance you will get as the shaft loses less energy. Keep it simple.

I hope that helps. Thanks.
