Question on Irons:

I have trouble hitting clubs especially irons from the fairway. I hit fat and thin. I can hit fairly well from a tee though. Please help!
--Stephen H. from Gainesboro, TN

Hi Stephen. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

I'd love to help you get better contact with your irons. To do this we need to make sure that you are maintaining the angles in your right wrist and right elbow (for right handers) on the downswing and releasing them at the very last second (at the ball). If you are releasing early or casting from the top you will hit the ground before the ball or catch it too much on the upswing. To help you check and see if this is the problem or to correct it try these drills here:

Move the Angles Drill:

Towel Drill for Chunking:

Both will help you maintain your angles longer storing your power and control until you unleash into the ball.

Another problem may be that you are not getting your weight properly shifted BEFORE impact. Try these drills here:

Front Foot Only Drill Stop Chunking:
Front Foot Only Drill Stop Chunking

Stepping Drill:
Stepping Drill

They are both designed to get you on your front foot as you come into the ball. When your weight is on your front foot you will be hitting down on the ball. If it is back or falling backwards you will be bottoming out too soon and swinging up on the ball.

Keep in mind it's hard for me to say for sure what your swing issues are without seeing your swing.

Thanks.
