Question on Irons:

What should the typical gap in distance between irons be? Sometimes I feel like I hit a 7 and 8 iron the same distance (not that big of a gap).

The gap between irons should be 10 yards. If you are not getting a 10 yard gap it's probably because of one of two reasons. 1. You are not hitting the ball consistently in the sweet spot. 2. You are not generating enough speed. If you are missing the sweet spot, off center hits will give you nothing but inconsistency. In this case the ball is missing the hot spot on the face and spin is probably being put on the ball. Both will make your distance erratic. For players that do not generate enough club head speed, it will often seem like all the irons go the same distance. Speed along with the varying lofts on the different club faces will propel the ball different heights and distances. A good example would be to imagine a 90 year old who has lost strength and flexibility resulting in loss of speed. Because the club is moving so slow, he or she might actually hit a wedge farther than a 5 iron simply because it has loft, so the ball will get up and carry. The 5 iron on the other hand will come out very low, hitting the ground quickly and losing momentum.
