Question on Mental Game:

While watching the PGA Tour, I notice players are always staying away from trouble and targeting certain parts of a green or fairway to give them the best chance to score. For the average golfer who isn't consistent, how much should they try to select a specific area to target? Should they just aim for middle of fairway/green, or should they aim for most ideal spot?

I think part of the reason why golfers shoot high scores is their lack of course management and focus on specific targets. Regardless of a player's handicap they should always have a solid pre-shot routine and mental game. Both will help bring scores down even if a golfer has poor technique. So yes, all players should aim for a specific target. With that being said, the target should be a smart target for that player's ability. Meaning, if they are a higher handicapper they should pick a target that gives themselves plenty of room for error should they miss it on either side. If they are a single digit player they can be more aggressive. Remember, always go for the reward, not the risk unless you have to take the risk to win!
