Question on Pitching:

How close must you chip/pitch to the flag to consider it a good chip/pitch? When is it good enough?
--Marc C. from New York, NY

Hi Marc. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm excited to get to help you with your game.

There really is no rule of thumb here. The answer would be close enough that you can make the putt. For most players that would typically be 3 feet or in.

PGA Tour Pros make 64% of their 6 foot putts. From 3 feet it jumps up to around 95%. The averages are obviously lower for the average handicapper so you can see that that 6 foot range is really iffy.

This all depends of course on how far away you are to begin with. If you are just on the fringe I would expect even the average amateur if they practice enough to be able to bump and run the ball up there under 6 feet. If you are 20 yards off the green however and have to throw it up in the air a bit and have a longer distance to the hole, then control is more difficult.

I hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks.
