Question on Pitching:

How do I hit the low-flying high-spinning "burning" wedge shot?
--Sammy A. from New York, NY

Hi Sammy,

To hit any ball low you must be more on top of the ball or even ahead of it at impact. This means you want your sternum and head over or in front of the golf ball.

Playing the ball back in your stance will of course facilitate this as will placing your weight on your front leg and keeping it there through the strike.

Your finish also plays a part. When you finish low you are typically staying more over the ball and keeping loft off of the face by keeping your hands ahead of the clubhead so this is ideal for a lower trajectory.

If you get your head and your sternum behind the ball and finish up high letting the club head catch up with your hands and re hinging your wrists, then you will throw the ball up into the air.

To get the ball to spin requires speed combined with loft and a clean contact with the ball.

I hope that helps and if you have any other questions please send them my way! Here is an article you may enjoy.
