Question on Pitching:

Thank you Maria. I am not quite a beginner. I play occasionally, but with little experience or skills. First, explain the difference between pitching and chipping. This is where I seem to have difficulties.
--Steve A. from Hyattsville, MD

Hi Setev. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you improve your game.

A chip is generally closer in to the green - say 30 yards and in. It is a smaller swing, a low ball flight and is about 1/3 carry and 2/3 roll. For chip shots you can use any club in your bag and you choose your club based on the amount of roll you will need once your ball hits the green.

A pitch on the other hand is generally a longer shot - 30 plus yards. It requires a bigger swing with high lofted clubs (pitching wedge, sand wedge, gap wedge or lob wedge) and of course has a higher ball flight. It is about 2/3 carry and 1/3 roll.

There are no rules in the short game so a golfer could hit a floppy pitch from just off the edge of the green if they desired, it just probably isn't the high percentage shot. You can also hit a chip style bump and run from 40 yards out in the fairway if you want. I am just giving you the general descriptions of each shot to help you better understand the difference.

I hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.
