Question on Pitching:

Hi Maria, how are you? Could you please share your rule of thumb in terms of the difference in distance if I was to choke down 1 or 2 inches from a normal 3/4 swing? For example, my 3/4 swing SW goes 80. If I choke down 1 inch, how much distance do I reduce by? Thanks.
--Terence L. from Bothell, WA

Hi Terence,

Thanks for the question. It is a great question. Typically I have found when I choke down, or up, however you want to say it that I lose about 5 yards. I don't typically lose a whole club length (10 yards) unless I choke down and try to abbreviate the swing. This could vary from person to person depending on their strength, technique and club head speed. In other words, one person may lose 5 yards, but another may lose 10.

Shortening my swing has always had a bigger effect on my distance. My guess is you will find the same thing with your game. That 3/4 swing may take off a good 10-15 yards while going full out and just choking an inch may only take off 5.

I said it was a good question because it's hard to say for sure without watching you and your technique. The only way to know is to go out and experiment and measure.

I hope that helps!
