Question on Pitching:

Hi Maria,
I'm a 5-6 handicap who struggles with pitches and chips to the extent that I'll putt from 10 feet off the green if possible. My issue is hitting pitches and chips either fat or thin and not getting that crisp consistent contact and trajectory. Have any drills or advice to help make better contact around the greens? Thanks!

Hi Christian,

Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you with your game.

I'm sorry to hear such a skilled player as yourself is having difficulty with these short finesse shots. Fat and thin contact is common in the short game and is usually caused by 3 issues:

1) A poor weight shift
2) An inside/out swing plane
3) An early release

You may want to upgrade to Pro membership so you can send your swing in for analysis any time you need to. That way we can easily see exactly what the problem is.

In the meantime I am going to get you focused on your weight shift and your release point. I'd like you to first practice standing only on your front foot for two weeks. This means that you take your back foot and put it behind you and up on the toe so you won't put any pressure on weight on it. Make sure to keep your head and sternum over your front foot as well. Do not allow yourself to rock or fall backswards during the swing or finish. Stay balanced over your front foot throughout.

This will eliminate the problem if it is weight shift oriented, but it will also encourage a later release and a swing path that stays more in front of your body as opposed to getting two far inside out. Please give it a try for a couple of weeks and see if things don't improve.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks!
