Question on Pitching:

I tend to decelerate when making short pitch shots and hit right into the bunker on flop shots. I end up sculling or hitting the ball thin a lot too. Is this a backswing or downswing problem?
--Cesar P. from Bethune, SC

Hi Cesar. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

Decelerating is definitely a common cause of thin or skulled shots. As your body/core stops rotating with constant acceleration to the target, the energy transfers too soon into your hands forcing them to accelerate. When your body slows and the hands accelerate too early the result is typically a flip. Unfortunately when this happens you catch the ball on the up swing and hit it thin.

Obviously a lot of things we do on the backswing directly influence our downswing. However, no matter how you take it back or where you are at the top of your swing, you should always be able to accelerate through the shot and get to a complete finish with a full weight transfer.

Try the One-Third-Two-Third Drill that you can see here:
www.mygolfinstructor.com/instruction/pitching/drills/
This drill will help you to continue accelerating through your pitch shots.

Or try the Handful of Pennies drill that you can see here:
www.mygolfinstructor.com/instruction/diagnosing-problems/drills/
This drill will help you to make sure you are releasing at the right time and hitting down through the shot.

Good luck and let me know how it goes.
