Question on Pre-Swing Fundamentals:

Is ball position the biggest factor in controlling the trajectory of an iron shot?

It is definitely one of the factors and probably the most obvious. If you play a ball back in your stance you will catch it more on the downswing and the face will be de-lofted or hooded causing the ball to come out low. When you play it more forward in your stance you will catch the ball after your club has hit the bottom of it's arc and is on the upswing. The face will then have more loft so you will hit the ball higher.

Your angle of attack and your weight distribution also have a huge affect on trajectory. Angle of attack is easy to understand. If you hit down the ball will come back up and if you swing up too much the ball will be knocked down. Weight distribution can be a bit more tricky. If you tend to have too much weight on your back side at impact you will swing up too much and top the ball knocking it down. But the same can be true if you have your weight too far forward because you can actually smother the ball and hit it low. A good combination of weight distribution, angle of attack and ball position is what determines trajectory.
