Question on Pre-Swing Fundamentals:

Hi.

I have a tendency to unconsciously increase my grip pressure on the forward swing to the point of shortening the swing and losing speed and power. This makes me lose follow through.

How can this be fixed?
--Larry V. from La Crosse, WI

Larry. You pose a difficult question because no one can jump inside your body and show you how tight to hold on to the club.

As you know grip pressure should be a 4 on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the tightest you should hold on. That means you should have medium pressure or less.

Having a good grip and having your club positioned in your hands correctly allows it to sit securely in your hands. When it's secure you don't have to squeeze. I always tell my students we want firm fingers, but supple wrists so that you can let the club naturally react to your swing and stay fluid.
