Question on Pre-Swing Fundamentals:

I hit my irons really straight, but when I hit my 3,5 and my driver I slice them? Can you offer suggestions?
--Nathan B. from Topeka, KS

Hi Nathan. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you with your game.

A slice is caused by a swing that comes outside/in through impact coupled with an open clubface. The list of things that can cause this swing path include:

- a reverse pivot
- a reverse weight shift
- a cast
- an open stance
- spinning the shoulders open too soon

As you can see the list is long and that just names a handful. This is why a slice is one of the most common swing errors in the game. It is also one of the easiest to fix in my opinion.

Without seeing your swing it is difficult for me to say what is causing your slice. The first two areas I would have you check are your stance/alignment and your grip. If these check out o.k., then then next step is to write back and we will start to explore your swing motion.
