Question on Pre-Swing Fundamentals:

What is the ideal spine angle?
--Dennis C. from Glen Carbon, IL

Hi Dennis.

Spine angle does change a bit from club to club, but there is only about a 7 degree difference between a wedge and a driver. It's almost something that happens automatically too based on the length and lie angle of a club.

Depending on your torso length, leg length, arm length and club length, your spine angle may differ slightly from the player next to you.

Ideally we want the butt end of the grip pointing right at your belt line. I would start with a wedge and get in front of a mirror and tilt forward with a straight spine until you see the butt end pointing at your belt. Your knees should have a slight flex and there should be a very distinct angle between your arms and the club shaft (let your wrists sit low rather than high). Try this with every club in front of the mirror until you are comfortable with and used to the right amount of tilt.

Hope that helps!
