Question on Pre-Swing Fundamentals:

Hi Maria,
How can I tell when I am the right distance from the ball at address? Should it be in the middle of the club face or toward the toe or heal?
--Phil F. from Battle Ground, WA

Hi Phil. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com.

If you wish to return to the sweet spot, you should start out there to give yourself the best chance of doing so. There is no reason to not start with the ball lined up in the middle of the face. If you don't, some sort of compensation or adjustment will have to be made with your swing to find the center at impact.

As far as distance from the ball goes standing with the top of your thighs (just rest your right hand on top of your right thigh and make a fist) a fist or a fist and a half away from the butt end of the club is the ideal distance. If you are more than a fist and a thumb you are reaching and too far from the ball. If you are less than a fist you are too close.

Thanks again for writing in. I strongly recommend you start logging your scores in the Game Tracker and plug your practice in the Practice Planner. This will help us get a better picture of your overall game.
