Question on Pre-Swing Fundamentals:

Placement of ball when hitting irons ?
--George B. from Lakeville, MA

Hi George. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you with your game.

In the old days they used to teach a progressive ball position movement where you would play your wedge off your back foot and with each club move it forward a bit towards your front foot until you get to driver. What I started noticing in the 80s and 90s is that more and more tour players were playing a consistent ball position.

If you think about it you want to trap your irons and catch them at the bottom of your arc. If you are making a good weight shift to your front foot, the bottom of your arc should be forward of center. This is where I recommend you play all of your irons. One ball forward of the center of your stance.

All of your clubs are designed with a specific amount of loft for a reason. When you position them in different parts in your arc, you are delofting or adding loft to them. So if you want to play the clubs with the loft that was designed for them and you want to get that perfect gap in your yardages between clubs, I recommend being consistent with your ball position. I hop that helps and here is an article you may enjoy:
