Hi John. Thanks for writing MyGolfInstructor.com. I'm looking forward to helping you improve your game.

Controlling your distance on the greens requires you to control:
1) Your Tempo
2) The Length of Your Backswing
3) How Hard You Hit the Putt

To work on your tempo I highly recommend a metronome. You can download them for free on your smart phone or pick up one at the local music store. They are great to have because you can use them at home to maintain a consistent tempo in your stroke. Find a beat that works for you. The average with the tour players is 84 bpm. Once you find a beat that you like practice taking the putter head away on the first beat and then impacting the ball on the second beat. No matter the length of your stroke, you need to make sure that you stay within the same tempo.

Once you lock into your tempo, try monitoring the length of your stroke. I use a taped yardstick for this with colors changing every 2 inches. I practice swinging from black to black or red to red, etc.. Find whatever length you need to get the ball to go the desired distance. With enough practice using this visual guide and combining it with a metronome, you will soon learn how far back you need to swing the putter for various distances.

Stay relaxed with light grip pressure so that you put the same amount of power into every stroke. When your hands and arms are relaxed you will use your bigger muscles (shoulders, back, abs) and they are much more consistent than using all the small muscles of your wrists and hands.

In addition, here are a couple of free drills regarding distance control for you to try which are normally reserved for our Pro members:

Give this all a try and let me know how you do.
Thanks!
