Question on Putting:

What is the proper putting swing?
--Mike B. from Taylors, SC

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the question. I'm not 100% sure I know what you mean, but I'm assuming you mean what's more proper, the arc stroke or the straight line stroke.

The answer to that it very debatable. For years the straight path stroke was the most taught and Dave Pelz made it pretty convincing that it was the truest way to putt. In recent years however, research and studying great player's strokes have shown that the arc is the way to go.

A lot of it has to do with the way you see things and what you are more comfortable with. If you tend to be more of a linear thinker and more left brained, you probably see a straight line out to your target and therefore would be more comfortable putting on a straight path. Note that your putter should be face balanced and designed for a straight line stroke.

If you tend to be more right brained and see a curving line to the hole (rather than just a straight line out to your target) you might be more comfortable with an arc stroke. Again, make sure your putter is conducive to an arc stroke.

I hope that helps answer your question and I might recommend our Putting DVD Putting Perfection as it gives both mine and Veteran Tour Player Jay Delsing's view on the putting stroke.
